Our Story

FROM THE IDEA TO THE FIRST PROTOTYPE

Back from his first transatlantic passage in 2013, Raphael Biancale, a casual yachtsman, searched in vain for a system that would make it possible to sail at night in complete safety. After numerous searches and various discussions with experts in the field, he wasn’t able to find a reliable solution. Heavily involved in intelligent automotive systems, he became aware of an opportunity for a genuine transfer of technology between the automobile and boating sector. Raphael Biancale then surrounded himself with specialists in software development and computer image processing to develop his project. He self-financed the initial developments and prototypes within his company BSB Driveline Solutions.

REASSURANCE AND FIELD TESTS

With the concept in hand, it became clear that the implementation of Oscar would need to be supported at various levels. In 2017 Raphael Biancale joined forces with Gaëtan Gouerou, manager of Mer & Projets and the then Chief Representative of the IMOCA class. Very quickly a memorandum of agreement was signed between them. With Mer & Projets came fresh expertise and a new network for the project: maritime expertise to better satisfy the expectations of the sailors and the offshore racing network so as to benefit from indisputable testimonials. With that, the skipper Jean Le Cam, convinced of the appeal of such a system, went along as a potential user and enabled the drafting of the first specifications. To date, he remains our most valuable tester and assessor. In the same year the project received financial support from the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) and the Austrian Public Investment Bank (AWS). In order to pursue and structure the development of the project, Raphael Biancale founded the BSB Artificial Intelligence GmbH.

WHERE WE ARE NOW

Where we are now - In early 2018, the teams associated with the three Vendée Globe winners, Vincent Riou, François Gabart and Armel Le Cléac'h, agreed to provide support and expertise for the project. Convinced by these initial commitments, which confirmed the feasibility of the system, and satisfied with the collaborations undertaken jointly, Raphael Biancale and Gaëtan Gouerou decided to create BSB Marine in Brittany. In late 2018, won over by the potential of this innovative project, the Brittany Region and the Public Investment Bank (BPI) France joined the adventure, contributing to the financing of part of the project's R & D.
