Our STORY

When passionate engineers, software developers, marketeers & sailors share a common vision – one can achieve great things.
Together, we want to make yachting safer and take another step forward in navigational technologies.

FROM BARRELMAN TO OSCAR

From the moment mankind began exploring the oceans, we have tried to adapt to the weather conditions and have taken huge steps forward when it comes to navigation and communication.

OSCAR has been specially designed to detect hazards that cannot be detected by radars, AIS or sonar. Objects such as containers, whales, trees, etc. are usually only visible once it is too late. OSCAR is the perfect supplement to your marine electronics.

… how it all started

The history of oscar

Raphaël BIANCALE, a Franco-German automotive engineer,
founder of the BSB Group, is the inventor responsible for the OSCAR system. On his return form a 6month sailing trip in 2013, Raphaël sought in vain for a system enabling a sailor to navigate waters by night in complete safety. With his work in intelligent car systems giving him great insight, he realised there was an opportunity to transfer the technology between the automotive sector and that of boating. Now, the nightmare of steering into complete darkness is at an end.
The skipper now has a new crew member and he goes by the name of OSCAR.

… nothing is as easy as it looks

technological breakthrough

In 2017 Raphael Biancale joined forces with Gaëtan Gouerou, director of Mer & Projets and the then Chief Representative of the IMOCA class. With Mer & Projets came fresh maritime expertise and an offshore racing network for the project, which truly lived up to the expectations of the sailors. Convinced of the appeal of such a system, teams associated with Jean Le Cam, Vincent Riou, François Gabart and Armel Le Cléac’h, agreed to provide support and expertise to the project and enabled the drafting of the first specifications. Many months of prototyping, testing and further prototyping and testing went into the development of OSCAR. With the help of the top race-teams and strong team members to drive the project forward, the first OSCAR system was born and raised.

… teamwork makes the dream work

well-distributed teams

OSCAR is made in Austria by BSB Artificial intelligence and developed in partnership with its sister company BSB Marine, located right in the sailing Mecca of Port la Forêt in Brittany (France). The proximity to the ocean and the best offshore racers in the world, helped OSCAR to subject itself to the strictest of all schools in a bid to improve the functionality of its system for the benefit of you and your crew. Data collected from users is immediately sent to our development centre in the beautiful metropolis of Lisbon (Portugal) where the data is analysed and the algorithms improved.
